J. P. ADAMS

John P. Adams, son of John E and Elizabeth Adams, was born on the Adams homestead, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Rockville, April 30, 1849, and departed this life Sept. 12, 1926, age over 77 years.
He was united in marriage in early manhood to Clarissa Ann Stryker. To this union seven children were born: Charles, James, Nelson of near Rockville, Mrs. Homer Marshall of Champaign, Ill., Edgar and Oscar (twin brothers) of Rockville and one child dying in infancy.
After ten years of happy life the mother was called away by death leaving the husband with four very young children. The others had preceded their mother in death.
Aug. 2, 1882, Mr. Adams was married to Ann E. Bishop, who became the very kindest mother to his children one could know. Three children came to bless this union, Mrs. Jesse Goodwin of Annapolis; Tomp M. of near Rockville and John E., who died in infancy.
Mr. Adams was the fourth child in a family of 10 children and he became the father of 10 children.
He leaves of his family the wife, four sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ed H. Crooks of Rockville (who is the only surviving member of his father's family) many relatives and friends.
May 6, 1894, he and his wife became members of the New Discovery Missionary Baptist church where he held his membership until the end of life. The following year he was ordained as one of the deacons of the church and performed faithfully the duties of that office and was a regular attendant at Sunday school and services so long as he lived in that community. Several years ago he retired from active farm work and moved to Rockville.
He was a man of sterling qualities, radically honest and faithful to his convictions; an obliging neighbor, a kind and loving husband and father. Much more could be said of this quiet unassuming man who lived his life openly. Surely his life was like a sheaf of wheat fully ripened, ready to be garnered. -- Republican 23 Jan 1924, pg 1 and Tribune 23 Jan 1924, page 1
