Ruth Carter Auwarter (Lewis) (Baumann) (Kaufmann), died November 24, 2014 after a brief illness.

Born April 28, 1922 in Beijing, China to agricultural missionaries Rundall McGill Lewis and Constance (Drew) Lewis.

Ruth proudly served in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during World War II. She enjoyed a career as a teacher of French, Spanish, Latin and Creative Writing at Triad High School in St. Jacob, Illinois, retiring in 1983.

Following her move to Atwood's Brook, Nova Scotia, in that year, she worked as a tour director for Atlantic Tours, sharing her love of the Maritime Provinces with travelers from all over the world. Her "second retirement" allowed her to pursue another of her passions, genealogy; she compiled an extensive history of the descendants of Waitstill Lewis of Yarmouth, NS, and treasured interaction with family members at the Lewis Family Reunions she organized at Glenwood Park in Argyle.

She married David Baumann in 1943 at Kentville, NS; they later divorced. She married Alfred P. Auwarter in 1953; After his death she married Fred Kaufmann in 1995.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Margaret and Jean, and her brothers Drew and John as well as her husbands Al Auwarter and Fred Kaufmann.

She is survived by her daughters Sally Van Natta (Tony), Elizabeth Pauk (Mike Corrigan), Jean Knowles (Robert), stepchildren James Kaufmann (Anthony Adamopoulos), Diane Willcox (James), Wendy Minasian (John) and Robert Kaufmann (Lynn).

She was devoted to her ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and delighted in their accomplishments.

A life celebration will be held on Sunday, November 30 at the Shag Harbour Community Hall, with another to follow at the time of the Lewis Family Reunion in August of 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Palliative Care via the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation; to the Harrison Lewis Centre in Port Joli, NS, or to the Chapel Hill Historical Society, Shag Harbour.

Provided by the H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Homes and Crematorium Limited located in Barrington, Nova Scotia.
