Sviatoslav N. Kocybala, 95, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. He was born in Babice, Ukraine on November 27, 1913. He received his law degree from the University of Poznan in Poland in 1936 and practiced law in Ukraine until the outbreak of World War II. Subsequently, he was director of personnel at the Pol'min Oil Refinery in Ukraine. On March 18, 1945, he married Gizela Stocky in Vienna, Austria. In March 1949, he and Gizela emigrated to the United States and settled in Yonkers, N.Y. where they lived until 1967. He was active in numerous Ukrainian organizations. In 1952, he was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Studies School at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was also one of the founders of the SUMA Yonkers Federal Credit Union, chartered in 1964, and served as its treasurer until his retirement. He was also active in the Westchester/Rockland District of the NYS Credit Union League. A resident of Croton-on-Hudson for over 40 years, he had an abiding enjoyment in writing poetry. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gizela, and his beloved daughter, Dr. Arcadia Kocybala, as well as by relatives in the U.S. and Ukraine. He was predeceased by his brothers, Vsevolod and Roman. Funeral services were held at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home in Yonkers on Wednesday, September 16, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Thursday, September 17, and entombment at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, N.Y.
