Adopted by John & Sarah McFarland, raised with younger foster sister. "Grandma Mac" always celebrated Aunt Mary's birthday on March 31st, to avoid an April Fools birthday, and her real birthday remained unknown to Aunt Mary until very late in her life.

MARY A. DEGARMO, 97 WINNEBAGO - Mary Alice DeGarmo, 97, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Winnebago, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008. Born April 1, 1910, in Cherry Valley and adopted by Sarah E. and John McFarland. Graduated from Cherry Valley High School. Married Emal B. DeGarmo in 1930 and spent her life raising four children and assisting in their farming activities while living progressively in the Centerville, Weldon and Winnebago areas. She was an avid gardener and a fantastic cook. Member of Evergreen Covenant Church for 42 years, always willing to prepare meals for church functions as well as for shut-ins. She was a lifelong member of the Westfield Grange and was active for many years in the Winnebago County Homemakers Extension. Survivors include daughter, Betty DeGarmo-Avery of Bonita Springs; sister, Myrna Tallacksen of Rockford; daughters-in-law, Carroll (Richard) DeGarmo of Pecatonica and Mary (Jerry) DeGarmo of Boston; grandchildren, Greg and Christina Heller of Florida, Sandra Conness of Rockford, Susan Ayers of Milwaukee, Rocky DeGarmo of Pecatonica, Roxanne (Jerry) Horn of Winnebago, Adam DeGarmo of New York, Heather DeGarmo of London and Noah DeGarmo of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by mother, Rika Ny; husband, Emal on May 26, 1986; brother, John Orr; sons, Richard and Jerry DeGarmo; daughter, Joanne Ayers; son-in-law, Derek Avery; and granddaughter, Terry Kramer. Memorial service to celebrate her life at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, in Evergreen Covenant Church, 3990 Prairie Road, Rockford, with the Rev. James Schwalm officiating. A period of fellowship in the church will follow the celebration. Memorials to Evergreen Covenant Church.
