Capt. J. F. West
Capt. John Foster West died at Harrison on Nov. 3rd, aged 74 years. The Fayette Chronicle of last week has this today of the deceased.
'John Foster West, oldest son of Ben F. West, was born at West Haven, Claiborne county, Miss., in August 1830. Most of his wife was spent in Jefferson county, but he was engaged in business in Yazoo county at the time of the outbreak of the Civil War; he assisted Capt. N. C. Luce in raising a company of infantry for the war and was elected its first lieutenant: this company became part of the 17th Miss. Vol. B G. Humphreys brigade; Capt. Luce was elected Colonel and Lieut. West succeeded to the captaincy ofhis company and served as such with distinction throughout the battles in Virginia until Gettysburg; where he was badly wounded and taken prisoner sand held on Johnson's Island until several months after the war, when he returned to Jefferson county and made his home here until the time of his death."
