Former Alaska resident Anna Sophie Benson, 79, died April 20 at Puget Sound Health Care Center in Olympia, Wash. A memorial service was held at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater, Wash., with inurnment in Olympic Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Benson was born Sept. 30, 1914, in Naknek, to Sophia and Gust Greichen. After the death of her mother, when Mrs. Benson was a baby, she spent the next 12 years in the Jesse Lee Home at Unalaska on the Aleutian Islands. She married Robert Clarence Jenks on June 17, 1935, in Naknek. They had four children and lived in various places in Alaska, Washington state, Hawaii, California and Guam. They also traveled extensively throughout the Orient. Mr. Jenks preceded her in death. She married Benny Benson on Jan. 16, 1971, in Kodiak. Mr. Benson designed the Alaska state flag. She and Benny had known each other since childhood at the Jesse Lee Home. Mr. Benson died in 1972. Mrs. Benson moved to Olympia in 1978 with her daughter, Vickie Era. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, hiking, playing the accordion, singing, reading, knitting and spending time with her children and grandchildren. In her earlier years, she was a ham radio operator in Alaska. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Ladies Oriental Shrine. She participated in neighborhood outreach Bible studies.
Surviving Mrs. Benson are three daughters, Vickie Era Rochester of Olympia, Vivian Ross Serven of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Viola Hamilton of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Alek Greichen of Anchorage, Ace Greichen of Bristol Bay; two sisters, Sophie Mollohan of Seattle, and Mary Alsworth of Kurtistown, Hawaii; and 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren in Washington state, Oregon, Texas and Hawaii. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Douglas Jenks, sister, Alice Braswell, and brother, Eli Greichen. Arrangements were handled by Mills and Mills Funeral Service in Olympia.
