James Reed was the son of John Reid and Eliza McNeilly McFarland, He married Laven Jean Turner.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny McFarland; sister, Betty Whisnant; son, Charles McFarland; grandsons, Shawn Biddix and Lucas Buff; and great grandson, Cade Arrowood.
