He was born one of two children to James Samuel Alexander (1888-1962), and his wife Amanda Bratton Alexander (1892-1973), in Gastonia, North Carolina, on September 4, 1916, another source says in York, North Carolina, on September 4, 1917. He was educated at the prestigious Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, before pursuing a professional baseball career. He played the position of leftfielder with the Newark Eagles in 1940. The 6'0" and 202lbs leftfielder who batted left and threw right continued to play with the Newark Eagles from 1940 to 1941. His 162 Game Average consisted of 492 Plate Appearances, 430 At Bats, 87 Runs Scored, 100 Hits, 25 Doubles, 6 Triples, 6 Homeruns, 44 Runs Batted In, 12 Stolen Bases, 0 Caught Stealing, 50 Walks, 0 Strikeouts, 0 Intentional Walks, 6 Hit By Pitch, 6 Sacrifice Hits, 0 Sacrifice Flies, 0 Grounded Into Double Plays, .232 Batting Average, .321 On Base Percentage, .362 Slugging Percentage, .683 On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage, and 87 Adjusted On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage.
