Herbert Lee "Buddy" Goates was the son of Benjamin Homer Goates and Eva Lena Harwell. He was married to Mary Louise Johnson on February 21, 1941 in Scottsville, Pope, Arkansas. Herbert served as a Private First Class in Company "B" of the 335th Infantry during World War II. He was killed in combat near the Elbe River just days before the fighting during World War II in Germany ended according to Eugene Cowles of Pennsylvania. Eugene served in "B" Company of the 335th Infantry with Herbert Lee Goates during the War.
