Craney was born in Bartow but experienced Pearl Harbor and World War II in Tallahassee as the daughter of Florida Gov. Spessard Holland, a Bartow native.

Craney, 10 at the time of Pearl Harbor, said commodities — from candy to gasoline to car tires — were difficult to find, even for the governor's family. She recalled her family planting a victory garden and installing a chicken coop at the governor's mansion.
now 85, was too young to volunteer as an aircraft spotter, but she said her older sister, Mary, did. Craney and her mother, Mary Groover Holland, sewed squares to be used for quilts sent to American soldiers.

Craney's older brother, Lindsey, served in the South Pacific as a Marine during World War II and returned alive.

One of Craney's enduring memories of the war involves Vice Admiral Frank Lowry, a Navy officer. Lowry left a Doberman Pinscher named Judy with the Holland family before heading overseas.
