He was the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Stites. He 1st married his cousin Martha Stites on Sept. 8, 1836 in Jefferson Co. IN. She was most likely the daughter of his Uncle Stephen Stites. They had a son who was stillborn. He 2nd married Margaret Jacobs on Dec. 16, 1851 in Jefferson Co. IN. Children: Cary and David. He 3rd married Martha Lewis on May 17, 1857 in Jefferson Co. IN. Children: Jonathan and Mary. He 4th married Ezeladora Jane Abbott on Jan. 30, 1862 in Jefferson Co. IN. They had no children. He was my 2nd great grandfather.

He was a farmer and an itinerant preacher. He rode around his circuit on horse back while living in Nebraska. He and Martha had moved there with his brother Nehemiah and his family in 1857. They lived in Peru, 12 miles south of Nebraska City, on the Missouri River. Both their children were born in Nebraska. Martha died when their daughter Mary was 8 days old. After Martha died, David sold the land he had purchased from his brother's estate and moved back to Indiana. He lived in Jefferson County and Decatur County and then moved to Brown County, Ohio. He lived there for five years and then moved back to Indiana. He owned 120 acres on Walton's Creek near Deputy, IN. His estate was appraised at $407.72. His widow Ezeladora received his real and personal property with the exception of 54 acres of land located in the SE quarter of Section 1, T4N, R8E.
