Alexander was the fourth of nine children born to John and Ellen (Haney) Armstrong who were born in Scotland and Ireland respectively. His father worked as a Currier, a worker who finished leather.

The family was residing on Silver St., South Boston when Alexander, the 10 months and five days old, died of Cholera Infantum eight days after contracting the deadly bacterial infection. His burial was at St. Marys Cemetery in Dorchester.
