Ralph R. Chapman, Sr, affectionately known as Big, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023 at the age of 83. He passed peacefully at his home in Richmond Hill, Georgia. He was vibrant, independent and on the go until his last day.

Ralph Sr was larger than life. He always thought of others over himself. He was truly a faithful husband, father, friend, Sunday School teacher, Deacon, among so many other ways he touched people. His wit was sharp, he was always honest and he did not suffer fools. He missed his calling as a writer and comedian. His stories are legendary, funny and entertaining. He was the local Lewis Grizzard. His stories can be read on his favorite Facebook pages, Georgia Folk and Farm Life and My Georgia Coast.

Ralph Sr is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia of Richmond Hill, his older brother, Ben Chapman Sr. of Richmond Hill. He is also survived by his son, Ralph, Jr. (wife, Julie) of Richmond Hill, his daughter, Allison Ingram of Richmond Hill, his five grandchildren, Ralph III (Chap) Chapman (wife, Kristen) of Denver, Colorado, Blaine Chapman (wife, Danielle) of Savannah, Kelsey Ingram of Richmond Hill, Braden Chapman (wife, Makayla) of Chicago, Illinois, Scott Ingram of Richmond Hill.

Ralph Sr was born in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of two weeks he moved to the South, living with his family between St. Catherine's Island and Collins, Georgia. He graduated from Collins High School in 1958 then served in the US Navy, sailing from the Arctic to the Mediterranean. He followed his time in the US Navy by getting his BA degree from the University of Georgia. Upon graduation from UGA he was immediately hired by the C&S Bank in Savannah, Georgia and rose quickly to the position of branch manager. Five years later he moved his family to St. Simons Island, Georgia to work at Trust Company Bank as Vice President. He was later hired as President of the Granite City Bank in Elberton, Georgia. His final move was to Bryan County as President of the Pembroke State Bank which became The First Bank of Coastal Georgia. Even after retirement continued on as a member of the board of directors of The First Bank of Coastal Georgia.

He served as a Lieutenant and Safety Officer for the South Bryan Fire Department for many years. He was often the first to the scene of an emergency, even into his 70's.

It was his wish that he be cremated and no services held.

The family will receive friends at Richmond Hill Funeral Home from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Saturday, July 1, 2023.
