J S LYLE PASSES
John Samuel Lyle was born November 17th, 1848, at Van Wert Court, Georgia. His father, J.A. Lyle, was of English parents and his father a soldier in the revolution. Mr. Lyle's mother, Elizabeth Noland was born in North Carolina, of French descent. While the father was a strong supporter of the Union, two sons served four years in the confederate army. When J.S. was a boy of ten the family moved to Alabama. Here Mr. Lyle grew to manhood and entered the cotton gin business at Eldridge, Alabama. Later he moved to Mississippi in Yalobusha county where for thirteen years he followed the same occupation. Here at the age of thirty two he married Miss Elizabeth Adams, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Adams, and Mr. Adams who also served in the Confederate army. To this union were born eight children, five of whom are still living. Adolphus of Waynette; Mrs. Agnes Plater, of Oklahoma City, Arthur and Leighton and Mrs. Lillie May Wright, of McLoud and Mrs. Fay Sterns of Lawton. Bernice, an infant, died forty years ago, this month. Frances Clyde, a young lady of eighteen, died February 25, 1908.r. Lyle joined the Baptist church when eighteen years of age and was a consistent member of that church to the hour of his passing.

When he came to Oklahoma territory in 1894, he moved to old Dale; and again entered the ginning business which he ran for three years and then came to McLoud where he followed the same occupation, from 1897 McLoud has never been without a Lyle gin. He was always interested in the welfare of his town and surrounding country. he served as alderman from his ward in the council. For many years he was a deacon of the Baptist church which he lived with a constant and abiding love. he was a student of the Bible from early manhood and familiar with its comforting messages. As a husband, a father and a neighbor he was know for his balanced character, his kindly disposition and sense of loyalty to his responsibilities. It has been remarked since his passing that Mr. Lyle was possibly the only man in town of whom it might be said that he never was known to speak an unkind or severe word of another, or, of whom others never had an unkind criticism. In early manhood Mr. Lyle became a member of the A.F. & A. M. in Mississippi but in later life allowed his membership to lapse giving his time to his church. John Samuel Lyle will be missed as few men are missed.

FAG volunteer Barbara Tynes Claiborne #47704197 shared the following information:

I searched all over the Lyle land there in Eldridge, Walker County, AL. Eldridge is located at the corner of Walker/Winston/Marion counties. This pitiful coal mining country is all stripped out.

John Samuel Lyle lived in Eldridge, Walker County, Alabama, until 1880, and then moved to Yalobusha, Mississippi, where he was a cotton buyer with a cotton gin.

In 1882, he married Elizabeth Wellington Adams in Yalobusha, Mississippi. Elizabeth is the daughter of Samuel and Artilicy Adams.

The only useful court house record was a land sale for John Samuel Lyle on July 18, 1884, to George W. Castlebury for $80.00, with his father, John P. Lyle, as power of attorney, since John Samuel Lyle was in Yalobusha County, Mississippi.

Around 1886, John Samuel Lyle took his cotton gin to Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. There he stayed until his death in Feb 1933.

An interesting fact about John Samuel Lyle:
He never wore a blue suit; always grey!

John Samuel Lyle's parents, John P. Lyle and Elizabeth Noland Lyle, died about 1895, (between 1893 and 1900, anyway), in Walker County, AL. Their graves have not been found.

John Samuel Lyle's father, John P. Lyle, was the son of John Pleasant Lyle, who was son of Maher Shallal Hashbaz Lyle.
Therefore, John Samuel Lyle is a direct descendant of Maher Shallal Hashbaz Lyle, being his g-g grandson.
