Mrs. Sarah (Riley) Gaughan, aged nearly 90 years, died at her daughter's home in Earlton, Kansas on Thursday, January 12, 1899 at 3:30 a.m.

Grandma Gaughan, as she was familiarly called by all who knew her, was born in Erris, Mayo County, Ireland.

She emigrated to America in 1863 with her husband and family. The family has lived in Earlton about 28 years.

In her last sickness, which was very painful at times, she was very patient, and invoked and called upon the name of her God and Saviour at all times. She died fortified and strengthened by the last rites and sacrament of the Catholic church.

She is the mother of Mrs. Michael Crane, Mrs. B.F. Pattee, Mrs. H. Brown, Thomas Gaughan, and John Gaughan, the only five of her children who survive her. Her living grandchildren and great-grandchildren number 70 or more.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. J. Borniger of Cherryvale, Kansas, at the Catholic church in Earlton, Kansas, and was attended, not withstanding the inclemency of the weather, by the relatives, neighbors, and friends of the deceased. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband, Thomas Gaughan, who died six years ago, in the Catholic cemetery four miles west of Earlton, KS.

May her soul rest in peace:
The editor of this paper had known and was personally acquainted with both Mr. and Mrs. Gaughan for many years before he moves to Chanute, and he takes this opportunity to add his testimony to the great worth of Mr. Gaughan and the widow who has now gone. There were no better friends, neighbors, or people, than Mr. and Mrs. Gaughan.
