Arrived in Boulder on 20 June 1859 from Iowa along with his four brothers, a brother-in-law and his father. Mined for gold in the Boulder County area. Dug the first Left Hand Ditch located above Ward, CO and became the President of the Left Hand Ditch Company during the Colorado Water Wars. Won the ruling of "First in time, first in right," also known as the Colorado Priorappriations Law. Served on the School Board for the Bader School, District No. 13. His farm the Hops and Hefer's farm owned by Oskar Blues.
