12th US Colored Troops Lt Adj, Civil War. Approximently 180,000 African Americans served and approximently 33,000 died in the Union Army. July 17, 1862 US Congress passed 2 Acts allowing enlistment of African American troops. Official enrollment began after The Emancipation Proclamation in Sept of 1862. They recieved $7.00 a month plus a clothing allowance of $3.50 compared to the whites at $13.00 and $3.50. Some units refused pay due to this being unequal. In June 15, 1864 Congress passed law granting equal pay for Black Troops. They served in every major campaign of 1864-65 except the invasion of Georgia. They were respected as good fighters by the white troops. Approximently 94,000 were ex slaves from seceeded states and approximently 44,000 from states of the union were ex slaves or freed slaves. Officers consisted of whites, enlisted troops consisted of blacks.
