On 15 Apr 1828, he married Sarah McClure, daughter of John and Margaret (McCullough) McClure, and immediately settled in Berlin, Holmes County, Ohio. He was a pioneer and representative man in the early history of Holmes County. In 1845, Edward was appointed as one of the Associate Judges for Holmes County, until 1851. Throughout his life he had been an apprentice to the carpenter and joiner trade, teacher, farmer, mercantile owner, Judge, assessor for Internal Revenue and Postmaster in Berlin.
