Charles died at his home on Chautauqua Road in Fredonia after several months of failing health aged 77 years. He came to America with his parents in 1846 at age one and a half and had always lived in the vicinity of Fredonia. He was a Civil War veteran having served in the 68th Regiment of the New York State National Guards. Charles is shown listed in the History of the Thirty Day's Campaign of the 68th Regiment, New York State National Guards as a Private in Company A. He had four brothers who also fought to preserve the Union, all who died because of it. He was a farmer and at the time of his death had 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
