Mary had a sister, Caroline M. Barden, who married David Apthorp, James' and Charles' first cousin. Mary was born in the town of Pomfret and always resided in Fredonia or vicinity except for twenty years spent in Michigan and Ohio. (Mary's husband, Charles, always resided in or near Fredonia according to his obituary. Perhaps they lived apart for a time or the information is inaccurate.) Mary, aged 87 years and 1 month died at the home of her son, Samuel, on Water Street, Fredonia. She left 23 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was a member of the United Brethren Church for 50 years.
Mary's parents were born in Vermont. Mary had 8 children of which 5 were living in 1900. At her death, four sons, Louis of Erie, Samuel of Fredonia, Fred of Jamestown and Harry of Arkwright were living.
