Stanley Robert Wheeler, 76, of Union Street died at 4:48 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

He worked at Arvin Industries for 40 years before retiring in 1990 as Assistant Treasurer.

A veteran of World War II, he was a member and former board member of Bartholomew County Historical Society.

He was recipient of the Tipton Award in 2001, and was a member of First Christian Church where he was active in the 3M Sunday school class.

A graduate of Franklin College, Mr. Wheeler was a 25-year member of Kiwanis Club; a member, tour guide, and former treasurer of the Visitor's Center; a member and former chairman of Service Corp. of Retired Executives; a former board member of the Bartholomew County Public Library; and an avid tennis player.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street with Chuck Souder officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Kiwanis Club or Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Mr. Wheeler was born April 21, 1927, in Sullivan, the son of Alvin Thomas and Harriett M. Stanley Wheeler. He married Maxine Church on Dec. 26, 1949.

Survivors include his wife; sons, David Stanley Wheeler of Storrs, Conn., Jeffrey Robert Wheeler of Bowling Green, Ky., and Timothy Richard Wheeler of Fishers; daughters, Penelope Gillie of Ellettsville and Sarah E. Wheeler of Lexington; a sister, Barbara A. Wheeler of Columbus; grandchildren, Meegan Gillie-Isenhour, James Stanley, Graham R., and Mariah R. Gillie, Colin Thomas, Rebecca and Nathan Navid Wheeler; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
