Actor. He received degrees from New York University and Columbia Law School but did not pursue a career as a lawyer. He made his Broadway debut in "A Farewell to Arms" in 1930. He spoke several languages. His face was scarred in an amateur fencing match. Among his nearly 100 films throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s were "The Thin Man," "A Gentleman After Dark," "The Good Earth," "Beau Geste," "Mysterious Mr. Moto," "A Slight Case of Murder," "The Gay Desperado," and "Charlie Chan in City in Darkness." He portrayed Hercule Poirot on a CBS and Mutual Radio series and starred in "I Cover Times Square." Died while undergoing surgery.
