Samuel W. Austin c1824 - aft 1899
Samuel W. Austin was born circa 1824 in Virginia and was living in Tazewell County in 1875. Tazewell County is located on the southern West Virginia border, southwest of Bluefield. Austin did most of his preaching in Virginia but in his later years, he did preach some in West Virginia. Brother Austin held meetings at Stover, Raleigh County, in 1872 and 1873, baptizing several people, who later made up the nucleus of the Stover congregation. He attended the 5th Annual Convention of the Raleigh and Fayette County Cooperation in 1875. At this time William Powell wrote: "We met. .. S. W. Austin, of Tazewell County, Virginia, a fine scholar and preacher, and a true man of God." (Christian Standard, October 9, 1875) Austin held a meeting at Prosperity in 1877. I then have no further information until 1899 when he attended a ten-day tent meeting at Roxie in Raleigh County, where W H. Devore did the preaching.

At that time, a member at Roxie wrote: "On Tuesday and Wednesday, sermons were by old Bro. Sam Austin, who is now 75 years of age. He has faithfully declared the gospel and faithfully preached the Word for many years, and has been the means of many turning to Christ. He is now waiting for that welcome call" (Christian Leader, July 24, 1899).

I was unable to obtain information about the death and burial place of this pioneer preacher. --Sandra Alderson, West Virginia Ministers of Churches of Christ. p. 35.
