On August 1, 1966, Thomas Eckman was among those killed by a sniper shooting from the University Tower. He huddled with Claire Wilson, his girlfriend, outside Benedict Hall after the shooting started, possibly shielding her. Thomas was shot after Claire Wilson was shot in her abdomen that left Claire to survive the incident. Eckman died in the hospital. In Thomas' memory, Frederick and Martha Eckman established the Thomas F. Eckman Memorial Collection in the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of BGSU's Jerome Library, donating the core poetry collection and establishing a fund for its continued growth.
