Mary Ellen Ogden was born the 10th of June, 1848, in Lewistown, Fulton County, Illinois, to Thomas Van Ogden and Sarah (Sally) Boardwine (Bordwine). The 1850 census listed the family at Waterford, Fulton County, Illinois, and the 1860 census listed the family at Lewistown, Fulton County, Illinois. She married Daniel Bolender on January 1, 1868, in Lewistown, and they are listed on the 1870 census there. In 1876they moved to Caldwell, Sumner County, Kansas, where they are listed in the 1880 federal census in enumeration district 208, Sheet 14, Line 18. They had 5 children. George Edward (1869-1946), Hubert Lereu (1871-1881)(buried at Caldwell), Sarah Catherine (Sadie)(1874-1942), Lilly Isabelle (Belle)(1876-1964), and my great grandfather Robert Henry (1878-1965), Lilly was born on the trip from Illinois to Kansas.

The story goes that Mary Ellen liked to go out dancing and Daniel didn't for whatever reason. Anyway, she hooked up with a guy that liked to dance, too. He left his wife and daughters and Mary divorced Daniel. They moved to Baca county Colorado and on the way they got married and had a daughter, not necessarily in that order. Anyway the marriage date shows the 23rd of April, 1889, in Richfield, Morton County, Kansas. I have found a land patent in the name of Mary E Bolender, dated June 19, 1891, in Colorado(Aliquot Part SW, Section 21, Township 30-S, Range 43-W, 6th PM Meridian, Baca County, Colorado.)

The 1920 Census shows them in Little Johnny, Las Animas County, Colorado. Mary Ellen died April 5, 1924, and was buried in the Simla Colorado Cemetery on April 7, 1924.

She was my Great Great Grandmother and apparantly was quite a character.

This Bio is exerpted from the Memoirs of her daughter Lilly Isabelle (Bolender) Butler. You can read a full copy at Autobiography of Lilly Isabella (Bolender) Butler
