Born in Skien, Telemark, Norway; 1855. Emmigrated to USA at age 16 (1871), w/his parents Peder and Carry Hoff, who owned, and retired from a lucrative mercantile business in the old country. They landed in New York in 1872, and later moved to Chicago.
Peter J. received his earlier education in the public schools of Norway, graduating the high school at age 14. After coming to this country, he obtained a position in a drug store in Chicago, and attended the lectures of the Chicago School of Pharmacy.

In 1874, he entered the Lutheran College at Decorah, IA, remaining there for a year and a half; following that, he worked at a drug store in Baldwin, WI, for a year; finally going to Zumbrota, MN, where he remained for 8 years. He came to Dakota (Territory) in 1883, and in the spring of that year, located at Buxton, where he practiced medicine for a year. He then purchased a drug store in Portland (ND), and after conducting it about a year, sold out and went to Sheldon. He arrived in Sheldon in 1885, with a few hundred dollars' worth of drugs. He was successful from the start, and was soon able to buy out his competitor and moved into the old Commercial State Bank building which he occupied until moving into the Masonic Temple.

He is/was known as one of the best pharmacists in the state (ND), having one of the best drugstores in the state. From time to time, he invested his surplus money in real estate, and owned several hundred acres of "fine Ransom Co. dirt".

"SHELDON CENTENNIAL; SHELDON, ND 1881-1981" booklet.

Corrections: He emmigrated from Skien, Telemark, to the United States on 26 June, 1872, with his parents: Peder Pederson Hoff and Kaia (Karine) Andersdatter/Andersen; and his 3 siblings, Laurine Frederikke; Christiane Emilie; and Marie Sofie. He had 3 older siblings: August Frederick (buried w/Peder and Karine); Clara Petra; and Carl Ludvig, whose whereabouts I have not found as of 2/26/2013. LS
