Macklin, who resided at 932 Costa Ave. in Chesapeake, was a native of Norfolk. He taught physical education and coached in the Norfolk city school system for 25 years. Early in his career, he was head football coach at Booker T. Washington High School. He also coached track there.
Macklin, 50, a graduate of Virginia State College, had experience heart problems for the past few years.
"Cliff was one of the finest men I've known in the classroom and as a coach," Maury principal Robert Steckroth said Sunda. "He was well respected by the teachers and students."
Steckroth said that Joe Thornton, Macklin's assistant, will coat the track team the remainder of the season.
Macklin's other position as cross country coach will be filled later. The Commodores won the Eastern District championship last fall.
Survivors include Macklin's wife, Teresa; two sons, Clifford H. Macklin, Jr. and Bryan S. Macklin, both of Chespaeake; five sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Ware, Mrs. Lillian Tyson, Mrs. Thelma Bailey, Mrs. Jean King, all of Norfolk, and Mrs. Eloise Stanford, of Detroit; and a brother, Cornelius S. Mackin, of West Germany.
A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in New Central Baptist Church of Berkley by Dr. William B. Westbrook. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The body will lie in state at Riddick Funeral Home form noon Wednesday until the funeral.
