He was born October 15, 1921, in Cassville, Missouri, the oldest of four children born to Linzie Smith and Mattie (Robbins) Smith. Most of his life he lived in Barry County attending school in the Cassville and Exeter areas. He served in World War II and was one of many involved in the invasion on Normandy and was awarded the Purple Heart in 1944. Upon his return from the war he resided in Exeter and made his living as a bricklayer. After retirement he moved to Shell Knob, were he lived the remainder of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden.
He married Norma Kathleen Gurley, July 18, 1941, in Exeter, Missouri. She preceded him in death January 5, 1973. He married Alice Gardner Vanslyke December 1, 1973. She too preceded him in death July 24, 2005. A son Gaylon, in 1966 and a great granddaughter, Angel, in 2003 also preceded him in death.
Survivors include: One brother, Hollis Smith and his wife, Lola of Independence, Missouri; two sisters, Norine Jones and her husband, Delmer and Grace Keeran all of Independence, Missouri; two sons, Paul Smith and his wife, Wanda of Jenkins, Missouri and Norman Smith and his wife, Vickie of Rogers, Arkansas; two stepchildren, Jim Vanslyke and his wife, Charlotte of Webb City, Missouri and Verna McBride and her husband, Pat of Springfield, Missouri; ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 4, 2008, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Burial with military honors will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter.
