William's first enlistment was on 27 Apr 1898 at Washington, PA. in Co. H, 10th Regt., Pa. Vol. Inf. serving in the Spanish-American War. He was in the Battle of Malattia (near Manila) P. I., July 31, 1898. Later he was in the engagement in the Phillippine Insurrection from Feb. 4, 1899 to April 12, 1899. He received an injury to his right eye at Polo, P. I. in the latter part of March 1899. William served overseas from June 14, 1898 to August 1, 1899. He was Honorably discharged on Aug. 22, 1899 at Presidio, CA..


William enlisted a second time on Sept. 10, 1900 at Pittsburgh, PA. in Co. H, 7th Regt., U.S. Infantry. He was then Honorably discharged on July 18, 1901 from the Army General Hospital in Presidio, CA.
