Mr. Shull was born at Martins Creek on January 26, 1859. After receiving his public-school education in that village, he went to Kutztown State Normal School to prepare for college. He attended Lafayette College for two years as a member of the class of 1882. For two years after leaving Lafayette, he studied law and tutored at Birmingham, Ala., and in 1880 he came to South Easton as a teacher in the high school. In 1882, he was elected to succeed A.D. McIlhaney as superintendent of the South Easton schools.

He held the position of superintendent on the South Side until 1895, when he resigned to accept a similar position at Perth Amboy. In 1931, he resigned after 36 years of efficient service.

The S. E. Shull Junior High School, Berwick Street and Seitz Avenue, dedicated on Friday, October 23, 1925, was named in honor of Mr. Shull. A Junior High School at Perth Amboy also bears his name.

In 188?, Lafayette College conferred the degree of Bachelor of Arts on Mr. Shull and in 1912, he received the degree of Master of Arts from Lafayette.
