Roy Lee Armstrong, Jr., 84, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Roy was born in 1938 in Cleburne, TX to the late Roy Lee Armstrong, Sr. and Opal Pearl Bowen Armstrong.
He graduated from Cleburne High School in 1957. Roy attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1957-1961 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and ranked in the top 5% of his class. He then continued his service in the U.S. Army for 2 years in Germany. In 1964, he began his career with DuPont. He worked in various management positions in Engineering, Manufacturing, and Research & Development Administration. He was a leader in Product Development and had extensive experience specific to the medical device industry. While working for DuPont, Roy attended Vanderbilt University and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1970. After 32 years at DuPont, he retired and began a new role at Dade Behring Inc. in 1996. He served as Director of Technology Management with continued success until his retirement in 2006. Outside of work, Roy's interests included reading, stamp collecting, photography, country music, bicycling, crossword puzzles, computers, cars, and watching sports – especially football. Every December he would faithfully root for the Army to "Beat Navy!"
Roy took great pride in his family, as they were his greatest joy throughout his entire life. Along with his wife Amy, he instilled strong family values that will be proudly carried on by his children and grandchildren. Roy was a very involved parent and grandparent, always supporting his family and their goals, and cheering on their achievements. He cherished his time with Amy and they were rarely apart. Their love for one another is infinite. Roy was kind, wise, hard-working, funny, loving, and easy to love. He was a true gentleman. His adoring family is thankful for every second with Roy, and they will miss him always.
Roy was predeceased by his sister Johnny Armstrong Abbey, and nieces Donna Lyn Abbey and Coley Morrow Ludwig.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Amy Freed Armstrong and his daughters Megan Cole Armstrong and Katie Armstrong Gulick; son-in-law Gregory Michael Gulick; grandchildren Theodore Lee Gulick, Virginia Pearl Gulick, and Natalie Sandra Gulick; niece Kristin Abbey George and her husband Ranji; nephew Christopher Scott Morrow and his wife Jayne.
Visitation will be at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 505 E. Buck Road in Wilmington at 10am on Wednesday July 19, 2023 followed by service at 11am.
Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle directly after the service.
