John Alcorn was born on 22nd January 1896 to Augustus Alcorn and Isabella Alcorn (nee Stewart) who farmed land at Claggan in County Donegal. John Alcorn enlisted with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Regimental Number 27245) and was posted to 9th Battalion on the Western Front after 1915. He was admitted to 76th Field Ambulance with gunshot wounds to the head on 6th December 1917 and was evacuated to a base hospital on No. 8 Ambulance Train the following day. Lance-Corporal Alcorn was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and the London Gazette reported the citation in March 1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his company was held up during an advance by machine gun fire from a strong point, he led a party in an attack on the position over ground swept by machine gun fire. He showed the greatest courage and determination, and captured the position, together with two machine guns and some prisoners." He was transferred to the Class Z Army Reserve on 30th March 1919 and was living at 182 Blythe Street when he was awarded a 20% Disability pension in respect of gunshot wounds to the forehead at the rate of eight shillings per week. The pension card records that he later lived at Glencollyer Street and Spamount Street. John Alcorn was a motor mechanic when me married Marcella Commons, a parlour maid, on 4th January 1924 at St Anne's Church of Ireland Cathedral. John Alcorn was recorded as the occupant in the 1926 Belfast Street Directory but the Alcorn family was evicted by the ISSLT in 1934 for non-payment of the rent. Some ISSLT tenants in Northern Ireland were withholding their rents whilst a case was progressing through the courts in Northern Ireland to determine whether the ISSLT had a legal right to charge its tenants rent. The Alcorns were living at Glasgow Street when a son, Reggie Desmond Alcorn, died at the Mater Hospital on 6th July 1934 at the age of four after falling from an upstairs window in the family home two days earlier. The Alcorns were living at Northwood Road when Marcella died at the Royal Victoria Hospital on 5th March 1946, aged 45. John Alcorn died at Northwood Road on 12th March 1982, aged 86. John, Marcella, and Reggie Alcorn are buried in Carnmoney Main Cemetery (Plot NN.1).
