s/o Samuel Lyons (d. 1890) and Bertha Brown (no death or burial information exists for Bertha).

It is possible, indeed probable, that he was born in 1862, not 1863 (given the birth date of his next youngest sibling is confirmed to have been in July of 1864). The 1870 census supports a date of 1862; so does his 1893 arrest record. But 1863 is the year reported on his death certificate by his wife.

Harris married Gertrude Langel in 1910 and they had one daughter, Bernadette.

Harris was frequently in trouble with the law starting as early as 1882 (according to numerous newspaper accounts). He gained widespread notoriety in New York with his involvement in the 1885 heist of the Schuyler Hamilton family silver and his subsequent testimony at the trial of the fence who processed the silver.

Harris's last arrest was in 1913, for operating a gambling house in the back of his business in downtown Newark, New Jersey. He served at least two years for that.

His recorded alias names included: Horace Lyons, Horris Lyons, John Raymond, John Edwards, Thomas Lyons, Henry Redwood, William Smith, Domenico Rocco, George H. Lyons, Sheeny Morris.

Gravesite Details

Multi-family plot in the name of "George H. and Gertrude Lyons Cufone" was originally purchased on May 25, 1921. "George H. Lyons" was an alias that he used between 1916 and 1923 -- unsure why he purchased the grave in that name.
