Fat was the youngest child born to Dove and Maud Walden Alkire. He married Helen Ruth Kinion on June 10, 1943, in Butler, Bates County, Missouri. They were the parents of two children, a daughter and a son.

Lloyd served as a Corporal in the 12th Cavalry during World War II. He was with MacArthur in the Philippines and had a leg nearly blown off when he dived into a fox hole just as a Japanese grenade landed in the hole. Lloyd spent nearly a week in the foxhole, amongst the dead, before being recovered by American forces. He then spent months in the hospital, refusing to let doctors amputate his leg. His leg never entirely healed.
