Calvin was the son of Thomas Dunaway/Donaway and Mary Ann McCloy. Thomas and Mary Ann were married on 19 Feb 1833 at the Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church in Harrison County, West Virginia. After their marriage they moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania where Thomas worked as a cooper and here their children were born. The Donaway family moved to Centre Twp., Morgan County, Ohio and were here for the 1860 census. Here Thomas was a farmer and Calvin helped with the farming. Calvin's mother, Mary Ann, died and Calvin moved to Rock Island County, Illinois with his father about 1863. Calvin married EMMA MERILLA DENNIS on 15 June 1869 at Rock Island County, Illinois. Calvin and Emma went to Wapello County, Iowa to stay with Calvin's sister, Mary Elizabeth McDonald and her husband William McDonald, for a short time before returning to Rock Island County, where their son, FRANK W. DONAWAY, was born on 2 Dec 1870. Calvin and Emma were divorced, and Emma married Samuel Dameron in 1874. Calvin's son, Frank, went to live with Calvin's brother, William Markel Donaway, in Bureau County, Illinois. Calvin and his brother-in-law, Joseph Murray, went to work at a brick and tile factory in Hampton, Rock Island, Illinois. About 1883 Calvin married NELLIE MARRS. Nellie was previously married to a Scottish man, John McGuirk, and had two sons, Arthur Alvin and William Alfred. Arthur took the Donaway name. Calvin and Nellie moved to Berrien County, Michigan where three children were born: FREDERICK DONAWAY, MAUDE LOERA DONAWAY HEVERLING and CLAUDE A. DONAWAY. The family returned to Rock Island where Calvin died. Nellie went to work as a washer woman and the sons also worked to support the family.
