John Maples was the son of Jonathan Maples and Sarah Desire (Chapman) Maples. He immigrated from Connecticut to Indiana where he met and married Eliza Jane (Mahuron) on 31 Aug 1833. They had six boys:

He died in 1845 in Jackson, Indiana. He was cutting timber to build a home when a tree fell on him--pinning him to the ground. He was found by a neighbor the next day, frozen to death with a log across his chest.
