Howard F. Schussler, 73, of Grangeville, died Wednesday at Syringa General Hospital here of complications from a stroke. Schussler was born Aug. 3, 1925, at Clements, Kan., to Howard and Flora Deering Schussler. He moved to Caldwell as a young boy and received his education there. He entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific. Following his discharge, he returned to southern Idaho where he owned and operated a sporting goods store. He spent a few years in Washington before moving to Grangeville in the 1950s. While in Grangeville, he managed the Grangeville lumber yard, worked on the Chief Joseph Dam, and owned and operated Howard's Builders Supply. He later worked as a building contractor, working on sawmills throughout the Northwest. Schussler was a lifetime member of the Elks, the Masonic Temple and the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. His survivors include one son, five daughters, 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Two sons, Chuck Winder and Scott Schussler, preceded him in death. A gathering of friends will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Grangeville Eagles Hall. (Lewiston Tribune 05.28.1999)

Howard served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was discharged 11 Oct 1945. He married and had 2 sons and a daughter with his first wife, and they divorced. In 1949, Howard married Beth Kershner and they had a son and 2 daughters, and they divorced. In 1963, he married Joan Sonnen and they had 2 daughters, and they divorced. In 1981, he married again but was divorced by 1987. In 1964, Howard's son Charles Winder died in an auto accident and in 1999, his son Scott Stephen Schussler died from an accident at work.
