Wert was a Civil War Veteran, serving as a Private, CO A, 45th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He participated in such battles as the one at Pittsburg Landing at which time he was shot in the hand while loading his gun and slightly injured. He became ill in Corinth but continued on with his regiment to Memphis, Tennessee. From there he was discharged on January 1, 1863. He returned to his father's farm.
