Elizabeth MORSE Obituary

MORSE,
Elizabeth
Gibson "Betty"

December 5, 1921 -
January 1, 2018

Betty Morse was born Elizabeth Gibson Allan in Yakima, Washington, and grew up on a family dairy farm in the Naches Valley. Her Scottish parents, William and Margaret Allan, raised five boys (Robert, John, Walter, Bill, and Alex) and two girls (Grace and Betty). The aversion of the children to early morning milking eventually led to conversion of the dairy farm into a large orchard operation called Allan Brothers.

Betty excelled at Naches High School and went on to Washington State College, where she became president of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta. During her time in Pullman she met her future husband, Laurence D. Morse. They married on May 22, 1944, just before he left to serve in the army in WWII in Europe. Betty used her bachelor's degree from WSC to teach home economics at Ellensburg HS for a year while waiting for her husband to return from the war.

After a brief stay in Eugene, Oregon, while Laurence finished his accounting studies, Betty and Laurence moved to Spokane to work and raise a family. They had four children: Dale, Mary, Bill, and Barbara. While her children grew, Betty volunteered and served as president or director of the EQ chapter of PEO, the Whitworth Auxiliary and the Barton School, which taught ESL to recent immigrants. She was also active in Camp Fire Girls and served as deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

Betty enjoyed sewing, hiking and traveling (visiting 69 countries and all seven continents). But most of all she enjoyed being around friends and everyone was her friend. She was loved by all, especially by her husband of 73 years and her four children. She also has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who will always remember her.

A memorial is planned at the Event Center of Rockwood Retirement Community for Saturday, February 3, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Barton School operated by the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
