Anthropologist, Author, and Museum Director. Duane H. King was an anthropologist who specialized in the Cherokee Indians. He was considered by many to be the preeminent director of Native American museums. He was the Executive Director of the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and several other museums, founder of the Journal of Cherokee Studies, and the first endowed Chair in Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina University. Among his many publications was the well reviewed book, The Cherokee Indian Nation: A Troubled History. He was also the senior advisor for academic research and program outreach for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. At the time of his death, he was Executive Director of the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
