William was the son of William Henry Spellman, Sr., and Mary Agnes Haley. He was born and raised in Hackensack, NJ. In 1937, he married Josephine Anna Dorling (daughter of William Frederich Dorling and Louise Anna Mondl). They had four sons and resided in Ridgefield Park, NJ.

In the late 1930's, William worked as a "sandhog" during the construction of the Lincoln Tunnel (which connected New York and New Jersey). Then he worked for 40 years as a maintenance supervisor for Aeroil Products, South Hackensack, New Jersey.

He was a very handsome man with the most beautiful light blue eyes.
