Edmund John Halter passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on July 4, 2023. Ed was the pillar of his family as a dedicated husband and father and steadfast church member. He leaves behind a legacy of his unwavering faith, love of family, fascination with flying, and patriotism. Ed's humble yet hardworking ways, sparkling blue eyes and radiant smile were a source of joy for all who knew him. He was filled with love for God shown by his gracious and thankful attitude. Ed was born in Bedford, Ohio to Edmund H. and Martha Halter who raised Ed and his older brother Matthew (Matt) in Maple Heights, Ohio. Ed followed in his big brother's footsteps, starting with working together picking seasonal crops on a truck farm when Ed was 10 years old; joining the Navy at age 18; and finally, in death, as did his brother Matt, passing away at age 95. Ed attended a one room Lutheran elementary school for 7 years, then on to public school, graduating from Maple Heights High School. He received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (then known as Case Institute of Technology) and later earned his Masters degree at Southern Methodist University. Ed joined the Naval Air Force and realized his dream of becoming an aviator. After 3 ½ years of service as a midshipman, he was honorably discharged due to a health condition. Ed worked in aerospace engineering and then specialized in acoustical engineering, designing industrial noise control silencers. He retired at age 72 and continued contractual work as a professional engineer until 90. After completing college in Ohio, he moved to Dallas where he met Carolyn Luecke (his wife of 61 years) at Zion Lutheran Church. They married in 1955 and raised their four children in Irving, Texas. A lifelong Lutheran, Ed was active in his church at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Irving. He served numerous times on the church council, sang in the choir, and for 23 years he was Mission Partner Coordinator of 616 partnerships for the North Texas Northern Louisiana Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and enjoyed creating fun Mission Moments for Synod Assemblies.
