John Mortimer was born in New Barbadoes (Hackensack) and was the son of John Spelman (Spellman) and Bridget Ford. In 1875, he married Bridget Ann Mullen and they resided on Lawrence Street, New Barbadoes (Hackensack), NJ. Together they had six children: Thomas Joseph, John, William Henry, Mary Winifred, Bernard Ignatious and George Francis. He was a foreman for the N.Y. & N.J. Railroad and a member of Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack.
