BEEGHLY ALICE ETHEL MOONEY Funeral Services for Alice Ethel Mooney Beeghly, 86, of Oakland will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 20th at Oakland's CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES FUNERAL HOME on 4499 Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. A beloved mother and grandmother, Alice died peacefully, at her home on the previous Saturday. The second daughter of Joseph Mooney and the former Martha Davidson, Alice was born in Berkeley, and always lived in the Bay Area. As a child, Alice was fond of goat rides, ballet practice, and sitting in her mother's wicker rocking chair. She graduated from Berkeley High School in 1934. Alice fondly recalled catching hot rod rides around town with her classmate Jeanette Gribbi, and another campus pal. A.J. Agajamoam, who later raced professionally in the San Joaquin Valley and Indianapolis 500. Additionally noteworthy BHS classmates include body-builder Jack LaLanne. Meanwhile, Alice's future husband, Crandall "Mike"; Beeghly had a fling as an amateur boxer. However, a glass jaw soon changed the transplanted Kansan's plans. Alice and Mike met, fell in love, and then married in 1937. Alice and Mike were very happy, they took several memorable vacations, and were proud of their two sons Mike was a bank teller with the American Trust Company, a Wells Fargo precursor. He died in 1956. Alice remained true to her husband and never remarried. She was also preceded by her older sister Grace Poytress of Santa Rosa. Alice's most exciting job was on Treasure Island; she worked from 1938-1940 at the Golden Gate International Exposition. Office jobs in San Francisco followed. For her final 35 years, Alice owned and managed rental property near Lake Merritt in Oakland. She was also an occasional baby sitter of children both in the Berkeley Hills, and those from up-and-coming academicians at Albany Village, the housing area for students at Cal Berkeley. As an adult, Alice favored self-reliance, the Republican Party, American-built cars, her cat Lamonica, a balanced diet, and daily walks around Lake Merritt. Alice was diagnosed with lung cancer this Mother's Day. With the kind assistance of Kaiser Permanente's Hospice Program, and the dedication of her family, Alice was able to remain at home during her final days. Survivors include her sons, Joseph and Arthur, of the family home, granddaughters Alice Beeghly of Hew Haven, Connecticut, and Jennifer Beeghly, of Claveras County; and a cousin Louann Salter, of South San Francisco. The Reverend Seamus Genovese of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church will conduct the services. Burial at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno will follow. The family suggests that memorial donations be sent to cancer research organizations. CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES OAKLAND (510) 654-0123 "SERVICE OF MARKED DISTINCTION" www.chapelofthechimes.com.
