Daughter of Virgil Stone and Lillie Victoria (Gurley) Stone
Maternal grandparents: Andrew Jackson Gurley and Louisa Victoria (Jordan) Gurley

Paternal grandparents: John William Stone and Phenia (Young) Stone

Phenia Sue is buried right next to her Material grandparents in Muleshoe, Texas. She died from complications of measles and pnuemonia on March 31,1938.

In my Aunt Lois' book of her memoirs "The Story of A Child" she writes:

"Dora and John were doing well in Lindrith,New Mexico.John was raising beans, pinto beans, and other field crops and made huge gardens but the beans were the money crop.Lillie and Virgil decided to move up there. They moved not realizing that their baby had been exposed to the measles. She took very ill and they had to take her to Albuquerque,New Mexico to the hospital. They stayed in their car while they were there. The baby died at St. Joseph Hospital on March 31,1938 and Dora and John brought the children and came to Albuquerque and put the baby in her casket in the back of John's pick-up and brought her to Muleshoe to Everett and Susie Smith's place. They kept her there for the viewing, I guess.Anyway, when I went over there,at the first glimpse of that precious Baby,I fainted for the only time in my life.It was such a tragedy. My dad just worshipped her. When she was buried in the Muleshoe cemetery in our plot,my dad took to his bed and just a week later,he died."...

It is so hard to imagine how the tragedy of losing a daughter,grand-daughter,niece and then a father, husband and grand-father ,could be on the Gurley and Stone family.Shortly after the deaths of their loved ones, they all left Muleshoe and headed to California.

After the death of my Aunt and the death of grandma Lillie's dad(my great grandpa),Andrew Jackson Gurley, grandpa Virgil, grandma Lillie,Elva Lou(my mother) and Uncle Bobby moved from Muleshoe to San Fernando California.Grandpa an grandma never returned to Texas,as far as I know.WWII started and grandpa Virgil was in ill health, lung problems from the Dust in Oklahoma and Texas, and he passed away in 1948.They were never able to place a headstone on Phenia Sue's grave, and my dear sweet Aunt Lois had always wanted to have a headstone put on her grave,so Anita in 2008 ordered one. With different things going on in Anita's life, they were not able to make the trip to Muleshoe until 2011.So on June 5,2011 my cousins Anita,Tonia,Gay,Beth and myself set out for Muleshoe. It was a wonderful, but sad time,I will always cherish the memory of us together placing a beautiful headstone on my dear little Aunts grave, who I never got to know.Anita designed and printed a beautiful book "Pilgrimage" about our trip to Muleshoe.Anita states in the book she knows now why it has taken so long to get here;"The time had to be right for all of us,but most of all,we needed her(meaning me Phenia Reynolds) to be here, not because she is the name sake of an aunt who died at such a young age,but because she is an extension of my Aunt Lillie and Uncle Virgil, her grandparents, who lost so much during those sad times".This book and the memory of our trip, will always be in my heart and a treasured memory.

Rest In Peace my dear little Aunt and know that "Our family chain is broken. And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one.The chain will link again."
