The oldest documented memorial in this cemetery dates to 1813. To quote "Cemeteries of Columbia County, Volume 2" published by the Columbia County Historical Society "As with many of the old cemeteries in the area, there are many unmarked or broken stones, many of them field stones with nothing written or with only initials and no dates. Obviously there are many more persons buried in the cemetery than are listed below (see book for list)." Martin Bender was not included in the list of burials at McHenry probably for one of these reasons. In 2023 a newspaper article dating to June 1929 was found outlining "the 10th annual reunion of the Bender family". A portion of the article reads as follows: "A committee was appointed to look up the record about the place of burial of Martin Bender in the McHenry cemetery". Note the wording is not questioning if he was buried in McHenry cemetery but the location within the cemetery.
