Dorothy Ophelia Whitaker Polk was born December 25, 1937. She departed this life on August 10, 2023, in Antioch, TN. She was the oldest of daughter of Rankin and Elizabeth Whitaker.
She will lie-in-state at V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the family present from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Rosemount Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
Dorothy was educated in the Maury County School System. She graduated from Carver Smith High School class of 1958. After graduation she married the late Mertie Polk on April 29, 1959. They later moved to Vallejo, California where she resided until her health begin to fail. She moved back to Tennessee in February 2023.
Dorothy was a quiet spirit. She loved cooking, shopping and her westerns. She worked for Napa State Hospital for more than 20 years. Dorothy was supervisor to the food service department where she later retired after years of service and dedication. Dorothy also worked part-time as Cooley-Rioloi mortuary as an assistant and compassion support for the grieving families during the loss of their love ones. Dorothy was an active member of several groups in her community. One of her favoritie groups was being the 50 plus and the lovely five. For many years she was a faithful member of second Baptist Church in Vallejo, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; sister, Anna Laura; brothers, James Robert and Walter; niece, Roxie and nephew Desha.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory a devoted brother and sister Michael (Deborah) Whitaker and Stephanie (Gary) Witherspoon both of Columbia, TN.
