George Wesley Hastings and Mary Ann "Polly" Winner married on 9 August 1867 in Barry, Pike county, Illinois. They farmed and had several children together including: Mary Etta, Nancy Ellen, James Samuel Olen, Sarah Olive, Charles Wesley, Maggie Mae, John Henry, William, Richard Clarence, John Floyd, Jessie Lelia, and Harry Amos Hastings.
Not long before Christmas in 1903, a tragic house fire cost the family their home, belongings, and the life of their son Richard Clarence. Richard Clarence is buried in the Winner family cemetery, which has since fallen into a state of disrepair. The house fire also caused serious burns to other familly members including George's wife, the children's mother, Mary, and son "Billy."
George Wesley Hastings died 11 March 1931, at age 85. Mary Ann (Winner) Hastings died 13 May 1932.
According to her obituary, Mary was a Baptist, and "always thoughtful of others and was loved and honored by all who knew her." According to the same source, Mary passed away from heart trouble. She had suffered from heart trouble and asthma "for several years," it said.
A note on the discrepancy between the marker and their surname: George, Mary and their descendants, as well as some of George's siblings spelled the family surname with an s on the end; his father Solomon and one or two siblings spelled it without an s on the end. There are various family stories as to why, but not yet having verified any, will leave it at that for now. It is possible whoever arranged George and Mary's marker felt it should be spelled as they themselves did. Everything during George and Mary's lifetime was spelled 'Hastings' however, including all their documentation.
According to the Illinois death index both George and Mary Hastings are buried in Parklawn cemetery. According to their obituaries, both are buried in Kingston cemetery.
