Johnsrud was an actor and a principal in the Broadway attraction Key Largo when he did in Misericordia Hospital in New York City from second- and third-degree burns sustained in a fire in his room at the Hotel Brevoort in New York City. Although seriously burned, he was crreditied to awakening the residents, Charles Ellis. an understudy, and his wife, who were both associated with the show. Firemen found Johnsrud collapsed in the foyer of his apartment, which he was though to have have returned in order to salvage belongings. Johnsrud was taken first to Bellevue Hospital and later removed to Misericordia where he died.

The actor appeared in 16 legit shows on Broadway in 12 years, which included A Doll's House and Waltz in Goose step. He was survived by his parents in Spokane, Wash. Johnsrud was married to Mary McCarthy from 1933 until 1938.
