United States Aerospace Engineer and Astronaut. He compiled 386 hours of space travel during three missions of the Space Shuttle Program. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1959 and earned his pilot wings a few years later. During the Vietnam War, he served with a number of tactical fighter squads and in 1966, he became an astronaut with the Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program. In 1969, he joined NASA and one year later (1970), he received his Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California. During his twenty years with NASA, he piloted the STS-6 Challenger mission (1985) and served as commander of the STS-51D Discovery mission and the STS-51J Atlantis mission, both 1985 respectively. Bobko retired from both the United States Air Force (with the rank of colonel) and NASA in 1989.
